Artist Portfolios

R. Sawan White

"I believe artists create for two purposes - because they are seeking something or because they have found it. And the truest art - the art that makes me stop clean in my tracks -it is both the seeking and the finding in one. This is not deep and existential, it is necessary to every human being. It is necessary to know that we live and ask and tell and interact with meaning.

I find language full of inconsistencies and delicate lines which translate into images to me.

I believe my paintings are like conversations, changing and edifying relationships. My paintings build not only one on the other, but within each one. The processes of my paintings - the layering of oil paint and waxes, the intaglio line drawings between each layer rubbed in and then back out again, the final layers hiding entire narratives beneath them - they are a vocabulary, a developing language as beautiful and frustrating as a spoken word. I don't think there is one grand masterpiece to be attained or a single theorem to execute the perfect painting. Like a old friend there is the foundation of years of back and forth of words which have chiseled out our finer features and taught what we believe. It is the process which matters, the act of interaction.

I believe so much of who we are is determined by what comes out of us."
